I'm Markus, a UX designer from Oslo. I studied interaction design at NTNU in Gjøvik, and then industrial design in Trondheim.
Before that I worked at a grocery store for six years, and I've also done about four years of customer support. In support I talked to a lot of people who were annoyed about something that should have been easy. I want to make things that just work, so people don't have to call in the first place.
When I'm not working I'm usually at the gym or watching movies.

A new layout for the mobile version of mLink, Moen Marin's system for boat maintenance, and a desktop overview of every boat being built.
Moen Marin is the world's largest supplier of work and service boats to the fish farming industry. They have their own system, called mLink, that is used to maintain and manage the boats. My main task was to work on the mobile version, which the boat crews use. I was the only designer there.
Customers and their crews kept saying the mobile version was lacking, and some said it was almost not usable.
I never had a direct line to the customers. Their feedback went through different channels before it got back to me. There also wasn't a well-defined design system to build on.
I ended up reworking the layout from the ground up. Since there was no design system, I tried to string one together while I was designing, so the parts I made could be used again.
Most of my time went into a new universal card in Figma that could work on all the pages that display information. The goal was a user experience that follows the same layout everywhere and is simpler to navigate. I made it with the desktop version in mind too, so it can be used there later.
I worked directly with the developers. We had frequent sessions where I showed them prototypes to get their feedback and find what I'd missed. I used that feedback to make new versions that fixed the issues. Later on, I started building interactive demos with Claude, which made for much better prototypes than the ones I made by hand in Figma.

For desktop, I made a new home page for Moen Marin's superadmins, to give an overview of the boats being built and the state each one is in.

Fixing the cards and getting the spacing consistent on every page made the biggest difference. The app looked much better straight away. I got a lot of positive feedback on the new mobile version from the same customers and crews who had said the old one was hard to use.
The desktop home page helped the sales department, who found it easier to tell customers how far along their boat was. mLink is in use today, with a lot of my work in it.

How you went about it, the choices you made along the way, and what came of it. Only what really happened, even if it's small.
A design system for the screens in a remote operations centre and on board the vessels it controls.
Shore Control Lab is a team of designers and human factors specialists working to make maritime technology fit human needs. Their research is about situational awareness, safety and usability.
I design for the systems in their ROC (remote operations centre) projects, both the remote screens and the ones on board. Right now the ROC is used for autonomous and remotely controlled vessels, and we're working on adding other fields like automotive and agriculture.
When I started in August, I mainly worked on a new design system for the whole research project. We used a well-known open source design system as a base. So far it holds the basics: colours, buttons, spacing, typography, icons, light and dark mode, and a set of forms and inputs.
The main idea is that the system is tokenized, so AI agents can use it to build screens with the same look across all the different systems. We use ChatGPT's Codex to build the tokens.
Alongside the design system, I've worked on some on-board interfaces, mainly a hub for a boat. I also use Illustrator for marketing material and some icon design.
I work mostly with students and researchers, and we meet every week.
